Looking for tips on building a cat shelter?

Did you know you can build a life saving winter shelter for outdoor cats using just a few affordable materials?  Winter can be especially tough for outdoor and community cats. As temperatures drop, these cats rely on warm, dry places to escape the wind, snow, and freezing air. The good news is that you can build an effective winter shelter using just a few affordable materials, and it can truly save a cat’s life.

What materials will you need?

  • Styrofoam coolers and/or storage bins
  • Mylar bubble wrap (for heat reflection)
  • Insulated tape
  • Straw for bedding (NOT blankets or towels)
  • Box cutter (for cutting entrances)

It is very important  to use straw for bedding only.

Blankets, towels, and hay absorb heat and moisture. When they get damp, even from the cat's own breath  they can freeze solid and cause a cat to become hypothermic.

1. Choosing your base: Styrofoam cooler or storage bin?

Both options work well:

  • Styrofoam coolers naturally hold heat
  • Plastic storage bins are easy to waterproof and customize

Pick a size that’s big enough for one or two cats to curl up, but not so large that warm air escapes easily.

2. How can you cut a safe entrance for your shelter?

Use your box cutter to cut an opening about 6 to 8 inches wide.

Tips:

  • Position the entry a few inches above the ground so snow and rain don’t flow inside.
  • Only add a second exit if needed (for colony cats who may fear being trapped).

3.Why line the interior with Mylar bubble wrap?

Mylar helps reflect body heat back toward the cat.

  • Line the inside walls with Mylar bubble wrap.
  • Secure the bubble wrap and lid with insulated tape.
  • Add enough straw and make sure the lid closes tightly.
  • Don't secure lid permanently, so you can add straw as needed.

4. How can you elevate and protect the shelter effectively?

Keep the shelter off the ground using:

  • Bricks
  • Pallets
  • Wood scraps

This prevents the cold ground from stealing heat and helps block moisture.
